Mithila Artist

Heritage & Tradition

The Art of Mithila

Mithila painting, also known as Madhubani art, originated in the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and Nepal. This ancient art form dates back to the time of the Ramayana, when King Janaka commissioned artists to create paintings for his daughter Sita's wedding.

Traditionally created by women on walls and floors of their homes, these paintings use natural dyes and pigments. The art is characterized by geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and eye-catching designs depicting nature, mythology, and rituals.

Natural Colors

Traditional Mithila art uses natural dyes from flowers, leaves, and minerals — turmeric for yellow, indigo for blue, and vermillion for red.

Sacred Motifs

Lotus flowers, peacocks, fish, and the sun are recurring symbols representing fertility, prosperity, and the divine connection to nature.

Kohbar Ghar

The Kohbar, or bridal chamber, is adorned with paintings depicting scenes of love and fertility to bless newlyweds.

This art form has been passed down through generations of women, preserving cultural identity and empowering communities.
